Hannah Smith’s Rabbit Hole

Hannah married Joseph Henry Peters on Christmas Day 1890.

Because Smith is such a popular name, its important to find a few collaborating pieces of evidence.  So addresses and occupations are important here.Joseph: 23 Walmer Road – Fa:Joseph Peters – Seaman (deceased by 1890)
Hannah: 21 Walmer Road – Fa: James Smith (b. 1843) – China Dealer; Hannah is 21 so b. 1869 (consistent)

Hannah Louisa Smith – born March 1, 1869, Kensington, Middlesex (London), England

Hannah’s father: James Smith (b. 1843) – Porter (What happened to “China Dealer” – curious.)
Hannah’s mother: Celia formerly Woods
Address: 23 Cambridge Place, Paddington

Below is a Baptism for “Anna” Louisa, born to James (b. 1843) and Celia, March 1, 1869.

Now James (b. 1843) is a “Labourer” – weird!

Moving on…

Hannah has 5 siblings:

1869 – Hannah Louisa
1870 – Charles Henry
1875 – James Edward
1876 – George William
1881 – Rose Cecilia
1883 – Esther Elizabeth

Below is Baptism for Charles Henry, known as Henry in future census. Father James (b. 1843) is a Porter now and they live at 4 Bouverie Street

Then the other 4 children are baptized the same day, July 29, 1883. However, mom is now Cecilia, James (b. 1843) is a “Hawker” and address is 7 Gilchester Terrace, London.

Below is a picture of Hannah’s brother, James Edward Smith (b.1875). So this would be Florence’s uncle. (Courtesy of Jan Smith)

Below is James Edward (b. 1875) birth registration.  Note the address. Just down the street from where the Peters lived in 1890. Jan tells me that James (the Father b. 1843) as a Hawker is someone who goes around selling things so… quite consistent with the China Dealer.

James Edward Smith (b. 1875 pictured above) married twice. First marriage was to Louisa Lake and they had two children: James Edward (b. 1900) and Louisa.  In James Edward (b. 1900) birth registration, the family is living at 3 Martin Street – the same address as the Peters family when Florence was born.  The second marriage was to Sarah Caroline Bartlett.  Through this 2nd marriage, there were two sons: William “Bill” George and Harry.

Here’s Bill in his WW2 uniform.

Jan tells me that when Bill came back from the war, all his belongings were gone as his family never believed he’d come back.

Bill with his brother Harry

Rose lived with Hannah for many years as she’s in a few of the census with Hannah and her family.  She never married. George is also with Hannah in a census.  So it seems that Hannah was a very strong family person.  She took in her siblings and became the legal parent of her granddaughter, Phyllis.

Here is Rose’s death registration.  Hannah’s address is consistent to other documentation at the time.  James (b. 1843) is a China & Glass Dealer.

I guess you see the reason why I’m writing the birth year beside the James Edward names.  There are THREE.
